Why I love Dancing With The Stars

Posted 04-15-2008 at 21:36 by leobold1
I've been asked why I love this show so much. And I admit, a manly man (how I view myself) enjoying watching a bunch of celebrities ballroom dancing seems a little...shall we say...girly.

Then I watched the show.

Seeing people like Master P, who is one of the greatest rap musicians/producers ever have no sense of beat, while large and ungainly Mark Cuban, the epitome of the white dancer learns and does decently with dancing is what I love.

There are people predisposed to this. Athletes, boy- and girl-band members, and older actors and actresses.

Athletes need the grace to excel in their sport (Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice, Apolo Anton Ohno and Stacy Keibler, Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Jason Taylor and Kristi Yamaguchi are some of these).

The boy- and girl-band members (Nick Lachey, Mel B, Mario and Joey Fatone) all are used to the extravagant and intricate dance routines.

The older actors and actresses (George Hamilton, Vivica A. Fox, Jane Seymour, Priscilla Presley and Tia Carrere) all have an inherent grace that has been learned over many years.

Then there are those who just can't take it.

Athletes such as Monica Seles and Evander Holyfield show that athleticism does not always mean grace.

But the worst are the ones who are famous for either modeling or being famous for being famous.

The farthest a model has gotten is week 3 (Rachel Hunter, Season 1), most are out in the first week.

The only person famous for being famous that has done decently was Heather Mills, who danced with one fake leg. It was finally fan voting that got her voted off after a string of lowest scores and bottom two memberships.

The drama about the show is a background to what I really love about it. I hate when Kristi Yamaguchi can't get a perfect score, or when Sabrina Bryan gets voted off for lack of fan support. I hate it when Master P sticks around for far longer than he should, while Wayne Newton gets bounced before he should.

Its not the personalities, although these are great. Steve Gutenberg danced with a man. George Hamilton was a true gentleman in every respect. Adam Carolla was different in numerous ways. Kenny Mayne gives back every season.

No, what I love the most is seeing these beautiful women. Between the professionals like Cheryl Burke, Kym Johnson, and Juilliane Hough and professionals like Shannon Elizabeth, Stacy Keibler, and Jennie Garth, this show has more babe power than any other.

And I love the behind the scenes confessionals. The humor of it is great. http://abc.go.com/primetime/dancingwiththestars/index

That and the dancing. I admit. I'm enthralled by it. The grace, the ability, the judge's comments, the humor the dancers put into it. Seeing someone like Heather Mills, who does suck at dancing, do decently despite having a fake leg; and Marlee Matlin, a deaf woman who's doing well is inspiring.

And I do love it.
