Default Clippers trade Ely, House to make room for Kobe

LOS ANGELES - The Clippers made another salary-cap clearing move to aid
their pursuit of Kobe Bryant on Tuesday night, trading guard Eddie House and
forward-center Melvin Ely to the Charlotte Bobcats for two second-round
draft picks.

House was signed last summer as a free agent. He averaged 6.8 points in 60
games this past season and was tied for third on the team in three-point
field goals. Ely was one of the Clippers' two No. 1 draft picks in 2002,
selected 12th overall. He competed for the starting center position in 2003
training camp, but played off the bench averaging 12.1 minutes in 42 games.

Meanwhile, Clis gus guard Quentin Richardson was in Phoenix on Tuesday where
he was expected to sign a six-year offer sheet from the Suns for between $40
million-$48 million. Richardson's agent Jeff Wechler would not confirm the
signing.

Richardson, a restricted free agent, reached an agreement with the Suns last
week. If he signs the offer sheet, the Clippers would have 15 days to decide
whether to match. He made $1,805,735 last season and the Clippers made him a
qualifying offer this summer.

The process is tied directly into the Clippers' continued recruitment of
Bryant, who met Monday night with Baylor and Dunleavy at the Four Seasons
Hotel in Newport Beach.

This sucks for the Clips. They gave away two young players for
nothing and still didn't get Kobe. Wonder if they can reneg on the
trade?

Win-win for them. If they landed Kobe, then great. If not,
they got rid of salaries for two players who weren't necessary
and didn't really fit into their future plans, which helps
offset the raise for Richardson, and gives them more cap room
to go after other free agents.

Also gives them two pretty high 2nd round picks.

You'd think they'd try to get something better for Ely.
I don't know, but a couple of seconds doesn't seem like
a win for them, even with Donald Sterling signing the checks.
