Default The 5 second Barkley rule is stupid

The rule where you aren't allowed to back your man in for more than 5
seconds is stupid. What if you isolate on one side of the court, and then
proceed to put on a bunch of one on one moves for over 5 seconds. What's the
difference?

Duncan pretty much faces up on his guy all the time, when he does his bank
shot. And he often holds it for more than 5 seconds. It's the same thing.

The refs never make this call anyways so why even bother?

It's because Barkley used to get the ball and back his man down for
about 16 or 17 seconds... daring the other team to double team him...
basically turned the game into a mud-slinging game of 1-on-1. I'm glad
the NBA put this rule in, it keeps the ball moving somewhat...

It's inelegant from a design standpoint. It's gerrymandering. Let the
defense doubleteam, or call the charge, or something. This is one where
you CAN "let 'em play".

But the prime directive of the NBA is "make money". People stopped watching
(Charles wasn't the only practitioner), so the rule was added.
