A recent Air Force Academy graduate, Karl Bolt, is the second-ever academy baseball player to receive a major league draft slot.
The Philadelphia Phillies picked Bolt, until recently a first baseman and outfielder with the academy’s Falcons team, on June 8 in the 15th round of this year’s Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.
Now the recently sworn-in second lieutenant is looking to defer his Air Force commitment so he can join the Phillies. He’s expected to report to a logistics readiness officer post at Georgia’s Robins Air Force Base.
Deferring Bolt’s five-year active-duty commitment would require top-level Air Force approval.
A somewhat similar deal was approved for Seattle Seahawks football player Bryce Fisher, an academy grad who put in two years in the Air Force before transferring to the Air Force Reserve Command. Mike Thiessen, chosen by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001, is the only other drafted academy baseball player.
Both Phillies recruiters and academy Lt. Gen. John Regni have shown support for his deferment, Bolt said. As a senior, Bolt led the Falcons in hitting (.349), hits (68), home runs (8), doubles (16), runs (34) and RBIs (47). A first-team all-Mountain West Conference selection, Bolt also was selected as the Falcons’ MVP for the second-consecutive season.
