CLEVELAND (AP) -- The first 10
Cleveland Indians to bat Sunday reached base and scored during an 11-run first inning against
Kansas City Royals starter
Luke Hudson.
It was the largest first inning by the Indians since they scored 11 against the
Baltimore Orioles on July 6, 1954. The team record for a first inning is 14 runs against the Philadelphia Athletics on June 18, 1950.
The 12th man to bat in the inning,
Travis Hafner, hit a grand slam to put Cleveland ahead 11-0. It was Hafner's sixth grand slam of the season, tying the record set by Don Mattingly of the
New York Yankees in 1987.
Hudson gave up 11 runs, 10 earned, on eight hits and three walks in one-third of an inning.
The right-hander walked
Grady Sizemore and Hafner around a single by
Jason Michaels to start the game.
Victor Martinez hit a two-run single and Shin-Soo Choo had a two-run double to make it 4-0. Ryan Garko singled and
Jhonny Peralta was credited with an RBI when his grounder was thrown away by shortstop
Angel Berroa.
Joe Inglett singled to load the bases and
Andy Marte's walk forced in a run to make it 6-0. Sizemore singled off Hudson's glove to score Peralta. After Michaels struck out, Hafner homered to right, giving him 104 RBIs this season.
Martinez doubled to finish Hudson, who was replaced by
Todd Wellemeyer. The right-hander got Choo to ground out and Garko to fly to left to end the rally.
