Default Oakland A's elephant logo?

Howdy folks,

Could someone please explain to me the significance of the Oakland
Athletics' elephant logo on their left sleeves? I have heard the story
before, but can't quite remember it. I'm sure it has to do with when
the team was in Kansas City or Philadelphia.

Thanks in advance for anyone who knows.

Phil
