| Civilians | I'm expecting to get an Indy Car that needs engine work. So my question is: Do the numbers match on these cars? I want to keep it original & need to know if I should repair/rebuild the original engine or if a good used one is a viable option. Rebuilding might be a bit more than the cost of just throwing a long-block in it, but the 2.5 in the Indy isn't particularly special so finding rebuild parts will be easy. | Civilians | The motor number usually is the assembly plant identifier and the assembly date plus a little bout transmission, etc. The serial from the VIN is also present and a factory replacement long block will not have the VIN serial. If somebody tells you they have installed a new engine and it has a VIN stamped on it, they have actually installed a rebuilt. The VIN serial is the only thing on the engine relating it to a specific car. Incidentally, the serial is the set of numbers at the end of the Vin and indicates the sequence of when your car was built. For instance 1G2PG1192HP201662 is the 1662nd 1987 Fiero built. If you have no compression, more than likely you have a cylinder head needing replacement. -- Robert W. | Civilians | >If you have no compression, more than likely you have a cylinder head needing replacement. ******** Yep I'm thinking first thing I'll do as soon as I get the car is pull the head & inspect the cylinders before I pull the engine. It's an aluminum head, right? If so it could be warped... Thanks for the all the info Robert. ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver" Giggle Cream - it makes dessert *funny*! |

| Civilians | >The partial VIN does link the drivetrain to the car. It consists of the sequence number (last 6 digits) plus some of the preceding digits of the car's VIN. I can't answer about the block casting numbers as I don't know the answer to that. JazzMan ******** OK so to keep the car all original I'll need to rebuild the engine. Not a problem as I can do everything but the machine work myself. That's excatly the info I needed - thanks Jazzman! Ummm... best place for parts? I'm told it has no (or very little) compression so I'm thinking it'll need boring & new pistons, head reworked; typical rebuild. I'm above Atlanta... ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver" Giggle Cream - it makes dessert *funny*! |

JazzMan ********* Thanks for the response. So the partial VIN does not match to a particuliar car; does it specify the year the engine belongs to? Anything else? ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver" Giggle Cream - it makes dessert *funny*! |
