Default AC Flushing?

Is it necessary to always flush an AC system? If so what tools are
required to accomplish this?

'95 Chevy Lumina, V5 compressor, R-134a system.

Thanks

When ever I helped with A/C work, flushing was only an issue if there
was something to remove. Example, bad compressor released metal
shavings, or r-12 to r-134a conversion(had to get out old r12 oil).
Everyother time, if FME was maintained, or the system was never broken
into, no flushing was done.

If you decide to flush, might as well change the filter too.

hth,

tom

A vacuum pump, it is also used to check for leaks.

Thanks Tom. Since this post I found some flush kits that work with air
hoses. The compressor makes a lot of noise and the system won't take
refrigerant in. I suspect something is clogged up.

I'm curious, when you say it won't take refrig, what are your
pressures? ballpark. If there is a clog anywhere, it's probly the
filter, usually upstream of the orifiace.

BTW, if you have a clogged in the system, there are two major sources
for it mechanical failure of the compressor, and break down of the
desicant. Both require more than a flush.

good luck,

tom <== dislaimer: Not a mechanic, just unlucky and had a lot of
things break down when I owned them.
