| Civilians | Hello group: My daughter has a '96 Cavalier. The tranny has stopped responding completely. No gears work and the fluid is brown. When we went to move it, she said that it would move. After she started it, she revved it to 3-4k and it lept forward and stalled. We restarted and from then on, nothing. Disabled. Dead. I think the cause of the problem was, she overfilled it by a quart or so. My question is: what part of the tranny would break if it was overfilled? I am familiar with RWD trannys (THM350, 400, etc.), but reluctant to yank this FWD tranny if I don't have to... (I'm getting to old for this sh__) |

The fluid being brown indicates high temperature like ctutch slippage. The fluid may also smell burn't. It sounds like it leaks and your daughter has just overfilled it, that can cause issues if it's way over full. A couple quarts of fluid will make the transmission fluid foam and introduce air into the system. Could be the cause of the problems. |

The pump seals or something may have broken. I was just fishing for any common GM FWD tranny issues, that may cause a symptom like no response until the engine is revved up. Something I could drop the pan and fix ) |

| Civilians | You aren't likely to find anything in the pan that is going to help you. The valve body is on the side, beneath the side cover, and you probably won't find anything in there, either, unless you are a tranny guy and know what you are looking for. I would suspect that the pump grenaded. Look for a junkyard trans with a warranty, that is my best advice.
