2002 Alero with "Popcorn" Noise in Suspension

I have a 2002 Alero 2.2l with 16,700 miles, and when driving over
small cracks I hear a popping noise from under the hood. It is NOT
related to engine RPM and occurs mostly when driving straight. I
can't duplicate the noise by pushing down on the front end and letting
it bounce back.

I did break part of the front air dam this winter, but I can't find
any loose pieces that would rattle around.

Any ideas???

I'd suggest checking the strut mounts - typically weak on all N-cars
