i was in Bosnia in 2001, so imagine my surprise when i went to bed after
seeing the race (it ended around 11pm Bosnia time IIRC), and waking up to
find out he was dead. there were a lot of NASCAR fans in my platoon, and we
were all stunned.

I don't know if this was some weird sensation, or just my
experience from working at races, but I knew he was gone
just from watching the brief shot of the rescue workers
at the track. Every hand signal was the direct opposite
of a 'driver OK' sign, and the workers looked like they
were having to psych themselves to maintain appearances.
The lack of actual news regarding his condition just
reinforced the feeling.

But it wasn't as obvious as Senna, who came to rest
directly in front of the camera.

I knew something was very bad when we briefly saw Schrader run over the
the #3 to check on Dale, and when he got there he recoiled, as if he'd
been smacked in the face, and started waving fervently for the rescue
crew to "get over here" ASAP.

Thank you. I had forgotten that. Perhaps that is why
Schrader never agrees to be interviewed about it.

It was the very brief interview that Schrader had soon after it happened
that had me very concerned. He was very obviously shaken.

It was obvious with the way Schrader acted!
