| Civilians | Just as I have suspected for the past few years, it turns out NASCAR has been the most popular racing on Canadian TV after all. Now that Jacques has no ride in Formula 1, Players is out of the picture in CART, and with persistent rumours that Paul Tracy may go stock car racing, perhaps NASCAR will get its fair share of coverage on this side of the border. Being on the cover of TV Guide is a good start. |

Having Carpentier, Tagliani, and Tracy racing in CART could make that series more popular in Canada than the USA. |

| Civilians | If you know anything about Canada, you are no doubt aware that Quebec is not unlike a nation unto itself. What's big in Quebec is not necessarily so elsewhere. I don't know what the figures are, but I wager there is little doubt that Nextel Cup is a much bigger draw. It certainly has been in any community I lived in. I suspect that before the implosion of Indycar racing with the IRL/CART split and subsequent near death, Indy racing was number one. This of course because the likes of Scott Goodyear, Paul Tracy, Tagliani, Villeneuve,etc..were at the top of their game. Popularity in this case is measured by Television ratings as well and F1 races shown live in the middle of the night doesn't help their cause. Freight train races which were the norm in F1 through most of the 90s didn't help either. I don't disagree. But I still think the statement that NASCAR "is" the most popular form of racing on TV in Canada to be PR BS. It might be in the future, but I doubt it is now (or in '03). bp |

And FWIW, Quebec is still part of Canada. Of course, I'm looking forward to the day Alberta isn't, which might not be far off. Then I can live at home *and* still live in the States. Best of both worlds... :-) bp |

| Civilians | Nascar is very not popular in Quebec. I have yet to find someone interested in this series. They don't talk about it on sports news nor in the papers. The French sports network RDS (french version of TSN) broadcast just a few tape-delayed races during the season. That's all. The only time when you hear about Nascar on the news is when there's the big one at Daytona or Talladega. Local short-tracks draw a few stock car fans during Cascar and Carquest events, but that's about it. People here are more into open-wheel racing.
