| Civilians | ( Money tree not in bloom for numerous teams http://www.nascar.com/2003/news/head...tus/index.html ) Nascar has become so expensive that sponsors are just not willing to put up the millions of dollars to sponsor a Nextel Cup team. I think the Greg Biffle National Guard/Subway/Travelodge deal is going to set the multiple sponsor precedent. Other teams will have to rely on multiple sponsors to ante up the big bucks. Look at the long sponsorship list: #1 (Not running full time next year) #4 #7 #11 #49 #54 #66 (Torquespeed Carter team, not sure of sponsorship status) #74 #99 How many of those teams will realistically get sponsors? Not many. One or two maybe. Bottom line, 9 teams with sponsorship trouble is just way too many and the sanctioning body (NASCAR) is just sitting around, doing nothing about it. |

It seems to me that NASCAR makes it very hard for cars to be out there racing. All the money that comes in from TV and attendance. *poof* gone. All the different rules make it near impossible for smaller teams to ever be a contender, or successful enough to gain sponsorship. What a mess. greg |

| Civilians | 1)Its called capitalism. In the 60s there was no guaranteed money like there is today for such men as James Hylton (48), J.D. McDuffie (70), Buddy Arrington (67), the first Gordon to drive 24 , Cecil, and dozens more. These guys slapped their cars together, showed up at the track, gave it their all, and, at least for Hylton, won two races (One where GoodYear screwed around with the compound, and it failed miserably. Hylton and Ramo Stott, driving Junie Donleavys 90, couldn't afford GY's latest mid season experiment, and ran on old tires, having a helluva duel at Talladega that Hylton won by less than one second..) 2)How do you feel sorry for the 1 team? That's part of a conglomerate, not an independent. NASCAR doesn't want any independents; they want teams with two, three and four cars apiece running their shows. The last thing they want is a single car team struggling to make the show, putting in 30 laps and parking it, because they can't keep up financially. (A special nod to the 74 team for being able to hang in there through most of the races with little or no sponsorship. I 'd like to see someone come along and help Tony Raines out...but, those are the breaks). Its bad enough we now have a flavor of socialism with this ridiculous "lucky dog" rule. Watch the qualifying shows. When a commercial break takes place, chances are either Morgan Shepherd, Derrike Cope, Carl Long, or some other woefully under team is rolling out for its attempt. Truthfully, the whole Cup scene, even at my age of 44 is a little TOO corporate for me. If this car makes it through this year and they can sort out the drivers (though I like Andretti) it may come back strong in 05 with a full time sponsor. > #4 Single car team. By definition, a dinosaur in the sport. No surprise here. > #7 See #4 above, though Jim Smith could put his Ultra Wheels on there as a sponsor if he had too. > #11 See #4 above. It's a shame here, these guys came up with Tony Raines through NBS and seem to be just now getting their feet under them good too. > #99 This car will run all season at the expense of all the other Roush sponsors. A few good runs and he'll have some small decals to put on it to get it through the season. So while this all seems big, it isn't since 90% or more of the teams struggling are single car teams and I have contended for some years now that single car teams are on their way out, this simply proves it. Some may be able to hang on a while, but the mega teams are the way of the future. There will come a time when 10 or so overall teams fill the 43 car fields at NASCAR events, you mark my words on that. There will be full fields at each event this year, some of these guys will pick up late sponsorship and all will go forward, just as it has since 1948-1949. In fact, my bet on the car count showing up for the 500 is 50. |

I dunno - if they do a little market research, they may decide it's more than worth it. I was thinking about this after the thread on "best commercial" a few days back. When the question was first asked, there really weren't any commercials that came to my mind. After reading all the responses, I recognized pretty much all the commercials people mentioned - I'd seen them, but they hadn't stuck in my mind. Now, contrast that with NASCAR teams - Pennzoil, Miller, Kodak, Kellogs, Pfizer, Sirius, Bud, Dodge - I can run down the whole list from memory (in order yet). Maybe that's a tad unusual, but my guess is most people remember the cars and the commercials just slide right thru. If advertisers start to realize they're not getting much retention for their commercial dollar, they might start looking more at sponsorship instead. I do agree with you that package deals are likely to become more common, where you see several companies sharing a seasons sponsorship. John |
