| Civilians | From the Lima News in Lima, Ohio Race driver going to prison By TIM RAUSCH 419-993-2097 trausch@limanews.com 11.04.2003 OTTAWA - A North Carolina sprint car race driver will be missing some of the next race season, ordered to spend the next 11 months in prison for sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl. Johnny Herrera, 37, of Huntersville, N.C., was sentenced Monday in Putnam County Com-mon Pleas Court to 11 months in prison for felony importuning and 60 days behind bars for misdemeanor sexual imposition. He was also fined $2,000. Herrera pleaded guilty in September to the charges stemming from an incident with a 14-year-old Kalida girl in June 2002. "I don't want to ruin Johnny's life, but I think he deserves whatever he receives," the victim said in a written statement read to the judge. The victim's mother said the girl was "awestruck" with Herrera's celebrity status. "How could you do this to our daughter," the mother said. "You were the adult and knew right from wrong." Herrera briefly spoke, saying the incident was "out of character" for him and that he was sorry. Judge Randall Basinger pressed Herrera about the difference in his version of the events as compared to the victim's. Basinger said he believed the girl's story that more happened that night than what Herrera admitted to doing. Both the victim and her mother said Herrera was a close friend to the family. Herrera was staying with them in June 2002 following a race when he gave alcohol to her and then engaged in sexual conduct with her. Importuning is soliciting another between the ages of 13 to 16 to engage in sexual conduct. County prosecutor Kurt Sahoff asked the judge to impose a restriction on Herrera as part of his sentence, ordering him to inform anyone of his conviction before staying overnight with the individual. The judge imposed the sanction. Sahloff said he wanted Herrera to begin staying overnight at hotels instead of with families with young girls. Herrera competes in the World of Outlaws Series, which runs from late February to early November. Herrera finished 12th in the points standing for this year, according to the racing circuit's Web site. http://www.limanews.com/story.php?IDnum=2016 |

Last I read, the medical establishment hasn't been able to figure out exactly why this is. |

Thought there was a little irony there. |
