| Enlisted Warrior ![]() | I am/was the initial of the Styrker Mobile Gun System (MGS) Master Gunner program. But my hat is off to the many many others that have helped in this burdensome task!!!!!! We (when it is complete) will have all the knowledge that will help out those M.G.'s that are in the SBCT's. Here are a few pictures for those who are interested If you need information on the Styrker Mobile Gun System, please contact the Master Gunner Branch, Ft. Knox, KY. | Dazed and Confused ![]() | RPG magnet! Thats thing is almost as big as an MBT, turret systems look exposed and are well above the stand off anti-HEAT round slat armour - so easy to hit!

| Enlisted Warrior ![]() | Well, the thing is about this vehicle is that it is an "Infantry Support Vehicle" not a tank. I agree that it is the most likely to be hit due to the fact that it has the baddest gun of all the Strykers. This vehicle was not intended to be 'the spear-head'. Its intent is to provide maximum firepower to the infantry when needed, to be called up from an overwatch position when needed. This vehicle brings a lot of assets to the Infantry community. Able to accuretly engage targets hundreds upon hundereds of meters away, and thermal survailence capability. So in all honesty if you look at in the way it is intended, you might see the good that it can bring. ........Your still right though. an RPG Magnent. |

| Dazed and Confused ![]() | DW, point taken - but it sounds like what we have classically termed a convoy escort. This role today tends to be filled out by tanks. The Candians recently used their up armoured Leo 1's for this role in Afgan (interestingly armed with a version of the venerable L7 105mm Rifled gun system, as is the Stryker MGS [M68i to the yanks]). Yes the MGS has air mobility on its side but this is obviosuly at the expense of any real shot stopping armour. If I was crewing a vehicle tasked with convoy escort duties especially 'Overwatch' which tends to mean standing off in a static location = lovely ATGW target, I would rather be sat in something a lot more substancially armoured like a CR2 or M1. Just my two penneth worth... ![]()

| Non-Commissioned Officer ![]() | When one compares apples to tomatoes there will always be one particular specification that can mislead the statistical results. One of which is a fruit, the other a vegetable, thou my home grown "sweet 100s" never survive the day at an office setting, they are none the less tomatoes. Yet a "granny smith" will leave a quirk on your face, and a longing taste in your mouth, however when the sun goes down it is still a fruit. A MBT is designed to engage like targets at range, all the while protect the crew from like targets. A M2/M3 or IFV is designed to provide ground pounders with mobility, fire power, and limited anti-tank capability. It is *NOT* designed to go head to with a MBT or prolonged exposure to ATGM positions. The MGS is designed to enhance the fire power available to the ground pounders at a greater stand-off range. With the larger gun it can additionally provide other large caliber missions that were previously unavailable to the infantry. It also is *NOT* designed to go head to head with a MBT, or prolonged un-supported missions. Think of the substantial improvements this vehicle can provide over other IFVs, to include a direct fire FCS that is capable, functional, and fires time tested ammunition across the full spectrum of the modern battlefield. We must believe in our leaders abilities to listen and learn from their master gunners, the transition team, and the manufacturer about the *ROLE* of this vehicle. Equip a man with a fish and he is fed for the day. Equip him with the proper gear and only time will tell how successful he will become. This vehicle may not meet the expectations of some of us (me), but this forum is probably not the place to discuss those issues
