Default Osut

Other than the length and specific job training, does OSUT differ from normal BCT in any way ??

No matter what your MOS, you still have to have (and pass, supposedly) training in the basic skills of an Army soldier. If a soon-to-be personnel clerk has to pass the course of instruction that Coyote mentioned, it stands to reason that a Tanker, or Scout, or even an Artilleryman would too. (I wonder what it would've been like if my BT and AIT had been combined......lessee, eight weeks of BT, followed by six months of AIT....oh HELL NO! No one should have to be training in the same unit for that long, lol.)

Tburn - Well First let me say congratulation on your selection of Armor and more importantly 19K!! Your going to have a blast!! Are you due to leave before X-mas or after? I don't think anyone is really shipping for basic training at this time of year but there are probably a few. Anyway You have got about 14 weeks of nothing but pure fun. Yes you will have to go through weapon qualification with the M9 pistol (everyone has one on a tank crew) and you might get to go to the M16/M4 (Depends) range to get familiar with that weapon. You will be exposed to the M240G (7.62mm) and the M2 (50 Cal). With out a doubt do what you need to to pass everyone of you tests with first-time GO's. You will be eligible for your "Excellence in Armor"(EIA). I do beleive they still have the program. I am not going to go into detail on this but as Nike says "Just do it". Most of the EIA students get about 10 120mm tank round to blast down-range and have fun with. Your basic will be challenging physically and mentally but stay focused on learning what you are taught and having fun. Take care

Regarding OSUT - who decides who will be a tank driver, tank loader, gunner. etc?? The Drill Sgts? In OSUT does everyone learn all the jobs associated with a tank crew, or are certain ones trained to be drivers, gunners, etc?

Just curious to know if the actual job the soldier will be doing is left up to his commander at first duty station or the Drill Sgts towards the end of OSUT.
