Default Looking for M35 Information

I was hoping to find a website that was devoted to the larger Military trucks kind of like the Big Electric site is for the M37 or the G503 is for jeeps. I purchased a M35 with a M185 van body on it and have a ton of questions. I tried the Mil-Veh list but am not getting many responses and several are contradicting each other. I was hoping to find enthusiasts who actually have a M35 and know some of the history. Anyone know of anything?

Thanks
Greg

Great!

1) I have seen and read all kinds of opinions on max speed and operation of the deuce. I drove it home from New York (550 miles) at an indicated speed of 60mph at about 2300/2400 rpms. The chase truck said I was actually doing more like 50-52mph. Any idea why my speedometer would be that far off? What RPM should I be cruising at and what speed should I be expecting?

2) Most of the deuces I have seen have headlights high in the grill with the blackout light below them. Mine is the opposite. Any idea what the difference is?

3) The engine in my Deuce was installed in 1990 and is a LDT-465-1D according to the plate on the engine. I had heard that the -1C engines were referred to as Whistlers because of the high pitch noise while operating. My -1d also whistles and not having anything to compare it to, I am wondering if maybe I actually have a -1C turbo on the engine? How do I tell the difference in the turbos? I have been told that the -1D has a larger exaust I believe but no one can give me dimensions to check.

4) I have been told by one guy that the civilian equivalent for the fuel filters is a NAPA 3511 and NAPA 3512 and others have said that they don't fit well. Any idea what filters I should be looking for? My truck was loosing power toward the end of the trip and I suspect that the years of low usage probably resulted in sludge in the fuel which is plugging the filters. I thought I would start there.

Many thanks for your response.

Greg

Whew,

That is one of the most intensive and detailed questions I have been asked to date!

Pappy,

You don't like any thing easy do you? I am going to pour through my manuals and documentation and get back to you on the Duece.

Keep asking the hard ones big guy!

Phillip

Greg,

Here goes, I hope you have the printer warmed up!

1. I belive the M-35A2 that you own is pre 1971. There can be a number of reasons why your spedo is showing a discrepancy in the speed. Primarily where the spedo is mounted and that is to the backside of your transfer case, via a 90 degree angle adapter/ reduction gear. It is for generalization purposes not accuracy. The top speed is about 56 mph, but higher if you have that van body loaded up and heading down hill. I used to exocise the transfer quite a bit driving up hills in Germany using it like a split shift( High and Low range with the same gear, just clutch it and throw the lever.). Your RPM range is right on for 5th gear and don't expect too much out off the old girl in the 1/4 mile she was made for grunt work and was always a trooper!

2. Where are your headlights mounted at? Pre '71 they were low and the B.O. Drive light was above them.

3. The Turbo on the 1 Charlie and the 1 Delta are the same, no difference between the two. The series changes on the engine were primarily due to fuel efficiancy if memory serves correctly though not sure. I belive your dimentions are 3 inches on your exaust and that wistling is normal to all series 2 1/2 ton trucks.

4. As for the fuel filters I can't give you any hard numbers but go with the Napa ones. Another thing you could do is visit a local National Guard maitenance shop and they would be happy I'm suer to give you a few sets of filters. Remember there are three filters on that truck. 2 paper style filters in cans on the drivers side of the engine on the back near the fire wall. The third is actually a fuel water seperator of the fabric type, located in the front left( looking at it from the front bumper) portion of the engine compartment nestled up by the oil pan. Your loss in power issue is a little vauge, I will need more info than that but I can offer some causes and reactions for you;

Sputtering or missing, is caused by water in the fuel or a bad fuse at the electric fuel pup located in the tank. The fuese is easily changable by removing the cap just rear from the fill cap. This will only be the issue if the tank is near empty. If you ecer run out of fuel with out this fuse operating you will have a heack of a time bleading the system after replacing filters. It's not imposaable just difficult.

Bogging or RPM rise with out noticable speed rise; Clutch free travel is off, consult the links below for proper specs.

Pay close attention to the Lube Order I attached. One of the main reasons for the failure of componants on those vehicles is improper lubrication. Another area you need to keep a constant eye on is your CV boots on the front axel. They are made of rubber and prone to tearing with out proper care (lube and cleaning).

Here are some links you are going to need to keep that old girl running well:

Phillip,
Thanks for the information. I will start here and see where I get. Still haven't located the filters yet but expect I should have some soon.
Regards
Greg
