They used their religion, Vicky and I never could understand why they took that stance when turning water into wine was Jesus' first miracle. That was the basis of the Prohibition movement.
As a Roman Catholic, I heard a lot about how we were going to hell for drinking alcohol (among other reasons) and using real wine during Mass. Never could see how religion could be used to condemn social drinking, but it was and is.
