If you are willing to invest in the domain name beyond registration fees,
why not contact the owner and propose a purchase. I have done this for
clients in the past. I simply ask the client to put a value on the name
(business use, ego, whatever), and then negotiate the purchase. There are
even escrow services available so the transfer can take place under third
party control.
